Ensign Broyles was the pilot of a F2H-2 Banshee fighter with Fighter Squadron 22 aboard the aircraft carrier USS LAKE CHAMPLAIN (CV-39). On July 26, 1953, after striking Hoeryong Air Field, North Korea, he failed to rendezvous with his flight. He was presumed dead on August 20, 1954. His aircraft was last seen in a 40 degree dive at about 6000 feet.

Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with Gold Star, Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
