Born in about 1844 in Pennsylvania to Henry and Margaret Harrison. Family lived in Exelsior, Sauk, WI by 1860.
Enlisted as a Private in Company E, 12th Wisconsin Infantry on August 14, 1863 from New Buffalo, WI, for 3 years. Older brother, Nathan D Harrison, also enlisted on same date. William was promoted to Corporal. He mustered out of service (along with brother Nathan) on May 31, 1865.
Their regiment, 12th Wisconsin Infantry, served in the Western Theater of the Civil War, taking part in Grant's Central Mississippi campaign, the siege of Vicksburg, the Atlanta Campaign (including the battles of Kennesaw Mountain, Bald Hill, Atlanta, Ezra Chapel, Lovejoy Station, and Jonesboro), Sherman's March to the Sea, and the Carolina Campaign (including the Battle of Bentonville and the occupation of Raleigh, NC). The 12th Wisconsin Infantry also participated in the Grand Review in Washington DC at the conclusion of the war, mustering out in Louisville, KY, on July 20, 1865.
