UGA Professor Emeritus. A native of Columbia County, Georgia, he was a graduate of the University of Georgia; he received a B.S. degree in Agricultural Engineering in 1944, and his Masters degree in Agricultural Engineering in 1955. In 1968, he received his Ed.D. from Cornell University. Dr. Crawford served in the U.S. Army Infantry from August 1943 to February 1946 and served in combat with the U.S. Third Army in France. He received his Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster. Dr. Crawford joined the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service as Engineer in 1946 and was appointed Head of the Extension Engineering Department in 1960, a position he held until his retirement in December 1978. As Extension Engineer, he worked primarily in the fields of rural electrification, farm structures and housing. He completed much of the site planning and building layout on the Rock Eagle 4-H Center and the Dublin 4-H Center. His Extension Service awards include a citation for Outstanding Service to 4-H, the 1971 Distinguished Service award from the National County Agricultural Agents Association, and the 1978 Ag Alumni Distinguished Faculty Award for Extension Personnel. In 2002, Georgia 4-H dedicated Founders Lodge at Rock Eagle 4-H Center to honor several individuals, including Dr. Crawford, for the contributions in the inception and early development of Rock Eagle. A longtime Athens resident, he was a member of Athens First United Methodist Church.
