Lindsey Jackson "Jack" Gray was born on February 5, 1895, in Bardwell, Kentucky. His parents were Ed and Margaret A. Loudermilk Gray. He had two sons and one daughter with his wife, Stella Catherine Polivick Gray, between 1928 and 1933.

On one tragic day he lost his entire family. June 22, 1935, his wife and three young children, Millard, Virginia and Charles, drowned in a boating accident in Mayfield drainage ditch, about four miles north of Bardwell in Carlisle County, Kentucky. He and others tried desperately to save his young family to no avail.

A logger by trade, he died on July 22, 1959, in Ballard County, Kentucky, at the age of 64.
