Susan was the only surviving daughter of her parents, and her brother, Philip Kearny, was their only surviving son. As a 2nd Lt., Phillip served in the 1st Dragoons at Fort Leavenworth under his uncle, Col Stephen Watts Kearny. Susan's future husband, Alexander Saranac Macomb, also served in that unit of cavalry. Late in 1840, Philip followed Alexander S. as aide-de-camp to Maj Gen. Alexander Macomb.

She and Alexander Saranac Macomb were married on April 9, 1840 by Rev. Wm. Higbee at St Paul's Chapel, NYC. They had two daughters, Catherine de Navarre b. Feb 23, 1842 and Susan Watts, b.Aug 2, 1849. Alas, their mother died much too young, as did her mother, and did not have the joy of rearing her children to adulthood.
