Selina was born in Ballyhalbert, County Down, Northern Ireland. She was the youngest child of James Curran and Jane Kirkpatrick, with seven older siblings. They immigrated to Canada about 1844, settling on Amherst Island, in Lake Ontario near Kingston.
Selina married John Cochrane on Amherst Island in 1861, and was the mother of nine children:
Elizabeth Jane, Mary, Agnes, John H., James, Archibald, Sarah, Victor and J. Selina "Sue" Cochrane.
In 1866, John and Selena immigrated to Chicago with their two infant daughters, "Eliza" and "Minnie". Their next seven children were all born in Chicago.
