Services for the Rev. Robert Lee Cates, 85, of Bonham, minister in churches of the Fannin County area for 50 years, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Cates died at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Medical Plaza Hospital at Sherman. Burial will be in Randolph Cemetery. Born at Orangeville, Feb. 29, 1892, he was the son of the late Euriley Cates and Callie Watson Cates.

He attended the OrangevIlle and Whitewright Schools and Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University, on a scholarship after being named rural pastor of the year. He married the former Lona Lee Garrett of Randolph Sept. 1, 1917, in the First United Methodist Church of Bonham. The Rev. Cates entered the ministry in 1926 serving churches in Fannin, Grayson, Hunt and Lamar counties. During the course of his ministry, he conducted approximately 1,100 funerals and performed approximately 600 weddings. He served as Sunday school teacher of the Couples Class of the First United Methodist Church of Bonham on a part-time basis since his retirement from the ministry in 1959. He continued his service for the New Hope Church until his health failed. In his church organizations, he always provided a special program for the children and youth.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs Lona Lee Cates of Bonham, son, the Rev. J. Harold Cates of Midland, daughters, Mrs Oneta Spangler of Trenton and Mrs. Polly Murray of Ector, brother, James Afton Cates of Waco, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. •
