John was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Eads of St Louis Missouri, and in Vietnam he served with Company D, 9th Engineer Battalion, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

A dump truck traveling on Highway 1 in the vicinity of the Khuong Nhon village complex north of the Chu Lai Military Complex in the Ly Tin District of Quang Tin Province detonated a mine that had been planted on the road destroying the vehicle. Six Marines were killed as a result of the explosion, and LCpl Eads was one of the casualties.
