Dorothy was born in Boone on August 3, 1934, the daughter of Conklin and Marguerite (May) Gay. She spent her whole life in Boone, and graduated from Boone High School in 1952. On August 17, 1952, Dorothy married Arnold ‘Smoke' Brogden in Boone. The couple recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary. From 1959 to 1983, Dorothy was employed at the Boone County Hospital as an EKG Technician. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Women's Firemen's Auxiliary, V.F.W. Post #817 Women's Auxiliary, and the Shriner's Auxiliary. Dorothy enjoyed spending time with family and friends and she had many hobbies including gardening, fish ponds, and her pets.
Dorothy attended creative writing classes at DMACC Boone Campus from 1997 to 1999 to further her interest in writing poetry and short stories. Particularly memorable was her volunteer time as a guide on the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Barbara Easterday and Mary Jane Ferrari, and two grandsons, Brent Larwick and Tracy Brogden. She is survived by her husband Arnold ‘Smoke' of Boone; son Kim (Katherine) Brogden of Coralville; daughter Jane (Loran) Larwick of Brush Prairie, Washington; son Dan (Cyndi) Brogden of Boone; seven grandchildren: Nicole Brogden, Shawn (Ashley) Brogden, Lance (Allison) Larwick, Travis (Amy) Brogden, Lee (Jynette) Brogden, Christy (Jason) Smith, and Ron (Sarah) Vodenik; 12 great grandchildren; a sister Elizabeth Lundberg of Linden, and a brother Conklin G. Gay of Boone.
