DAN C. BARKSDALE NOV. 14, 1918 - OCT. 3, 2005 Dan C. Barksdale, 86, of Oakdale died Monday October 3rd at Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson following a brief illness.
Dan was a native Californian born in Community Hospital at French Camp in 1918. Dan enlisted in the U.S. Army January 16, 1936 at Fort McArthur. He served in E Troop, 11th Cavalry at Presidio Monterey and participated in opening ceremonies of the Golden Gate Bridge in 1937. Among the various assignments during more than 20 years of military service, Dan served in the Pacific during WWII, in Korea from 1952-1954 and as a Harbor Pilot in Yokohama, Japan. Dan retired from the U.S. Army in June 1957. From 1957-1979, Dan was a Correctional Sergeant at San Quentin Prison. In retirement, Dan was an avid golfer who enjoyed playing 18 holes with his favorite foursome at Dryden Park. He also enjoyed walks with his dog Pokie and most especially spending time with his family.
Dan is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Barksdale of Oakdale; five children and their spouses: Dona and Bill Shaw of San Diego, Dan Jr. and Sheryl Barksdale of Suisun City, Dennis and Sharon Barksdale of Sacramento, Dale and Jamilah Barksdale of Concord and Denise Barksdale of Oakdale; and eleven grandchildren: Leigh Ann Shaw, Dan Barksdale III, Sarah Barksdale, Katie Barksdale, Joshua Barksdale, Craig Barksdale, Alexis Barksdale, Nicholas Barksdale, Donald Mays, Dylan Mays, and Diane Mays.
Memorial Service will be at Franklin & Downs 12th & G Streets, Modesto, Saturday October 8, 2005. In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to: Community Hospice Foundation, Alexander Cohen House, 7700 Fox Road, Hughson, CA 95326.
