Born in Eugene, Oregon, third and youngest child of Charles and Florence (Quinn) Gilson. His parents died when he was young and he was raised by his sister Alice (Gilson) Stathem. Graduated from USC in 1947 with majors in physical science and political science. Awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to New Zealand in 1949 and later in London on South Pacific studies. Doctoral scholarship in Pacific History at Australian National University. Assistant Professor in anthropology at Los Angeles State College in 1962. His life's work, "Samoa, 1830 to 1900" and his history of the Cook Islands were published many years after his death.
Married Miriam Baird (Probably in London in 1950), who he met in New Zealand. Two children.
