VanDevender Dies Friday
Came to Basin in Year 1905
Death Followed Long Illness
C.L. Van Devender, 73, who has been in poor health for some time died at his home last Friday morning at 10:20 o'clock. He had been a resident of Basin since 1905.
He was born at Clarinda, Iowa, Nov. 7, 1863, and came to Wyoming in 1882. After attending the state university he was employed by the Kemmerer Coal company as assistant engineer. One year after he came to Basin he was married to Bertha Keene Nov. 7, 1906, who survives him.
Van Devender was very active and well known in Masonic circles within the state and Rocky Mountain region. He was a master of Temple Lodge No. 20 in 1935, and was Grand Patron of the Wyoming Order of Eastern Star in 1929.
He was successfully engaged in the furniture business with William Gibson for many years. Later he was associated with Frank Bringham in an automobile supply shop. Until a few months ago he retained his partnership in this shop, later with Charles Kemp, when he sold part of his interest to Leonard Martin.
Van Devender was a good businessman, priding himself on prompt payment of all obligations. He was held in high esteem by his business associates and friends, and was known as a man of unquestionable honest and integrity.
He was a lover of flowers and was one of Basin's first citizens to make a really attractive garden. He built a beautiful home several years ago, and this home and garden are notable contributions toward making Basin a town of attractive homes.
Funeral services were held from the Van Devender home Saturday at 2:30 o'clock p.m., with the local Masonic order, with the Rev. Mr. Nelson Wurgler officiating. A choir of A.B. Henderson, Kemper Ahrens, B.C. Curtis, and A.X.Johnson provided appropriate music. Pall bearers were Frank Hime, Josh Ellis, W.V. Dolezal, Fred Frisby, J.A. Berry and Wm. Feddersen. Burial was made at Mountainview cemetery, with Masonic services at the grave. W.K. Severy acting as Worshipful Master. The Republican Rustler with the many friends of Mrs. Van Devender extend its heart-felt sympathy.
