MAN TAKES OWN LIFE

GOUVERNEUR --- John J. Absalon, Sr., 65, Hailesboro, former highway superintendent for the Town of Fowler, was found dead about 8:45 p.m. Thursday, at his home from a self-inflicted rifle wound to the head.
Gouverneur State Police said the body of Mrs Absalon was discovered on the back porch of his home by his son-in-law, George W. Yerdon.
Dr. A. E. Dodds, Ewards, St. Lawrence County corner, issued a vertict of suicide and no autopsy was ordered.
Mr. Absalon was reported to have been despondent over the death June 8 of his granddaughter, Desiree I. Absalon, 3, and other illnessin his family.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Sprague Funeral Home, Rev. Standley E. Brown, pastor of the United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Hailesboro Cemetery.
Survuvors include his widow, Mrs. Irene Absalon; a daughter, Mrs. George (Sharon) Yerdon, Fowler; two sons, Durwood, Hailesboro, John Jr., Fowler, and eight grandchildren.
Born in the Town of Fowler on Dec. 13, 1904, a son of Seymour and Mary Bigeral Absalon, he married the Irene Hitchman at Gouverneur on Oct. 7, 1927. Rev. Maynard P. Beach officiated.
Mr. Absalon worked for years for Freeman Brothers Farm Equipment as an operator of heavy road machinery. He became employed by the Town of Fowler in 1932 and was named highway superintendent in 1934, aposition he held until resigning May 15, 1970.
He was a former member of Gouverneur Lodge 217, F. & A.M.
