Marriage license of George Lee and Rosetta Cone, located at DeKalb County Court House in Sycamore. Like most licenses this is a pre-printed form with blanks filled in, written in longhand. It reads:
"THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, to any person legally authorized to SOLEMNIZE MARRIAGES: Greeting: STATE OF ILLINOIS, County of DeKalb, ss.
You are hereby authorized To join in the Holy Bonds of Marriage between Mr. George W. Lee and Miss Rosetta Cone of DeKalb County, and this shall be your good and sufficient warrant; and you are required to return this License to me within thirty days from the celebration of such Marriage with a certificate of the same endorsed thereon and signed by you.
IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand, and the Seal of said County, this 19th day of December A.D. 1855

The minister failed to write Rosetta's surname on the certificate. On the back of the certificate, where the Clerk writes the date the certificate is filed there is a note that says "File and Render Feby 26 1856 [s] Wm H Beavers" On the other side of the fold, someone had written a list of some sort, including "1 oz Corosive Sublimate(?), 3 inches Lunasastre(?) 1 half pint _____ for pot____." Who wrote the list and for what purposes it was used is a mystery...one wonders if this is the reason why the Clerk didn't file the certificate until well beyond the 30 day deadline.

"George W. Lee was born in Sterling Co., Ohio, in 1832, and when not quite three years of age he came to this part of DeKalb county with his parents.
He was married in 1856 to Miss Rosetta Cone, in the log house on the old-Cone homestead, and all the remainder of his life, with the exception of about five years, in Missouri, was spent in this immediate neighborhood and for
several generations the Lee family owned and occupied the farm just west of town, recently bought and sold by Mr. Stewart. The family took up land originally from the government. He died Wednesday evening at the home of his daughter Mrs. William Cheney.
Mr. Lee 's wife died Dec. 17, 1910.
Their only child is Mrs. Cheney, with whom he has made his home for some time. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home and the interment was in the Miller cemetery."
