Col Jeptha Cass Garrigus, Sr served in the War of 1812. In 1821 he moved his family, including 13 children, by boat down the Ohio River, up the Wabash River and Big Raccoon and settled in the southwest part of Raccoon township which was virtually all wooded wilderness and wild animals.
