The son of Peter B. & Elizabeth (Kone) Wilhelm, in 1860 he was a farmer living
with his family in Baltimore County, Maryland.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered with the U.S. Navy sometime during
1864 and served as a landsman at various times aboard the Aries, Allegheny, and
Brandywine, and honorably discharged June 8, 1865.

He married Martha W. Hoshall and fathered Grace Steffey (b. @1877 - married
George Charles Matthews), Ada (b. 03/13/79, d. 10/15/79), Hester E. (b. @1882 in
South Dakota - married a Shaffer), Bessie May (b. @1886, d. 1894), and Martha
Hoshell (b. 11/??/95 in Minnesota). Martha died in 1895, and he married the
much younger Minnie Ada Hymiller, fathering Virginia Elizabeth (b. 11/26/12 -
married Harry Joseph Getz). A carpenter later in life, the cause of his death
is listed as a "malignant carcinoma of pyloric end of stomach" leading to
"septic infection." At his death, he allegedly was the immediate area's only
Civil War naval veteran, a reasonable claim that nonetheless remains unverified.
