John Howard came to Alberta from Ontario around 1892 to look for a homestead, and his wife Lizzie and two daughters, Annie and Millie, and son Charlie, followed the following year. The family stayed in the Lone Pine Stopping House until their own living quarters were ready. Another son, James Brine Howard, was born in 1900. The hardships of the pioneeers were fully experienced as the little community grew. John participated in various enterprises; creamery, cheese factory, raising horses, hardware and furniture store, and farming. Their homestead was north of Bowden.
