Carolyn J. Doering, a resident of the Hinsdale area for more than 80 years, died on January 29, 2013 at Sunrise Assisted Living in Palos Park, where she had resided since 2009. Born December 2, 1920 in Oak Park, IL to William R. and Ina C. Jordan, Mrs. Doering lived in River Forest, IL until 1929 when she moved to the home her parents built on Cleveland Road, south of 55th Street, in Hinsdale. Mrs. Doering's father, a Chicago attorney, was developer of The Woodlands of Hinsdale and a local philanthropist, who was a founder of the Hinsdale Community House and LaGrange Memorial (formerly Community Memorial) Hospital. Educated in the Hinsdale public schools, and a 1938 graduate of Hinsdale High School, Mrs. Doering studied theater arts at the Goodman Theater of Chicago and entered Northwestern University in the fall of 1939. She met her future husband, Henry H. Doering, Jr., at a freshman dance her first weekend at college and it was love at first sight: the Doerings were married on March 14, 1942, and spent 66 years happily together, until Mr. Doering's death in 2008. The Doering family lived first in Clarendon Hills, and from 1985--‐ 2004 in Hinsdale and Burr Ridge. The Doerings moved to Peace Village in Palos Park in 2004. Mrs. Doering was active in Grace Episcopal Church Hinsdale, where she served for many years on the Altar Guild, as president of the Episcopal Churchwomen, as manager of The Anglican Shop and chair of the Celebrity Series, among many other accomplishments. Following in the footsteps of her mother, Mrs. Doering was a proud member and former Regent of the Captain Hubbard Burrows Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution as a descendant of Capt. Phineas Taylor Castle. Mrs. Doering also counted Rhode Island founder Roger Williams, and Colonial religious martyrs Anne Hutchinson and Mary Dyer among her ancestors. She also served as both a Cub Scout and Brownie leader when her children were involved in those programs. She enjoyed playing golf and bridge, loved animals and nature, collected antiques, and was an inveterate reader. She was active in the Chicago Lyric Opera Guild and volunteered for the Chicago Symphony Association Most important, Mrs. Doering was a devoted daughter and sister, and a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Nothing pleased her more than being with her family, who all appreciated her kindness, gentleness, intelligence and sense of humor. Mrs. Doering is survived by her children, Margaret Castle, Henry Hans III, Katherine (James) Hamann and Richard Campbell (Kara Von Marion), and grandchildren, Timothy Castle, Christine Anne, Jordan Campbell, Robert Whitely and Halston Violette Doering, and Mason Chan. She is also survived by her sister, Barbara J. Clark and brothers Castle W. and Roger P. Jordan, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, granddaughter Mary Doering, grandson William Doering, and brother William R. Jordan, Jr. Funeral services will be Monday, February 4, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of The Transfiguration in Palos Park, with burial to follow at Bronswood Cemetery in Oak Brook.
