daughter of William G Kropp and Jane E Kipp

Dorothy was one of only a handful of female meteorologists when she first began her career. Graduate of New York University, she worked in various locations: Asheville, NC, Boulder, CO, Boston, MA, Buffalo, NY, Charleston, WV, Maryland and Washington, DC. While most of the work was in meteorology, she also did solar research and oceanography. During her working years, she met and befriended many people. She was on the receiving line at Andrews Air Force Base for Indira Gandi. She and co-workers would get together with Willard Scott, a fellow weather enthusiast. After 30 years of rotating shifts, she retired from the Federal Government in 1995. She moved back to New York to be close to her sisters.

Her love of weather stayed strong; she loved to be outside sitting under the covered patio during a thunderstorm. She was always on the weather sites reporting the forecast to those who asked her about the upcoming storm. She knew that people in her field were criticized by the public when the weather didn't match the forecast, but this did not deter her from enjoying it and doing her best with the resources she had. During her younger years, she enjoyed backpacking and hiking, canoeing and art. She had her private pilot's license, did some sailing and traveled extensively, mostly in the U.S. She also completed a 1200 mile bike trip from Houston, TX to Jacksonville, FL. Dorothy had developed an interest in gardening, and after retiring she was able to pursue this interest. She worked at Wessel's Farm in Otisville. She enjoyed this time, and learned a lot from them. Her landscaping talents were evident to those who lived close to her. Dorothy was an avid reader. Whatever her interest was at that time, she would buy books and read to learn everything there was to know on that subject. She was also interested in the family genealogy, and spent many hours researching both her maternal (Kipp) and paternal (Kropp) families. She shared this interest with several cousins. They shared and exchanged whatever information each had. She was passionate about her pets, always having many of them, but never enough. Cats and dogs were always adopted or rescued. The family would like to thank Hospice for their kindness and compassion during this very difficult tune. Dorothy had many friends, including many from high school, and those that she met on her travels around the country. These friends have been incredible in their kindness, support and encouragement. She was truly blessed to have them all.

Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, William G. and Jane E. Kropp; a brother, Denny Kropp, and a sister, Kathy Kropp. She is survived by a sister, Sharon Kropp and her partner and Dorothy's long-time friend, Wilfred Sweet; a nephew, Chris Kropp of Goshen; a niece, Pilar Van Vliet of Hudson, CO, and niece, Susan Gaudin of Fairbanks, AK.
