IRON MOUNTAIN-Family members of an Iron River man who was killed in an oil field man camp in North Dakota earlier this year remember him as a kind, loving person who always put family first.
Christopher King, who would have turned 33 years old this month, died on March 17 from two stab wounds to the chest. His long-time friend, 31-year-old Ryan Anderson of Iron River, stands accused of his murder.
Anderson is set for a two-week jury trial in Williams County Court from Feb. 10 through 21.
Christopher's grandmother Rosalie King of Caspian wanted to come forward after seeing the recent news reports about Anderson's bond being reduced.
"People tend to forget about the victim," she said. "He was such a kind, loving person."
Christopher was the oldest of four sons born to Dave King of Caspian and Jacqui Hernandez of Marshfield, Wis. His brothers Stefen, Nicholas and Kori also reside in Marshfield.
According to Rosalie, the four boys were simply known as "the brothers," since they were always together. Christopher's father Dave recalled that all four even had the same tatoo.
"He loved family," said Rosalie. "The first thing he would do when he saw you is give you a big smile and hug you."
"He was a big guy, but there wasn't a mean bone in his body," Dave added.
Although Christopher was not a lifelong resident of Iron River, he spent several years in the area when he was young, then returned before he went off to work in North Dakota.
Rosalie and Dave explained that Christopher had been friends with Anderson for a long time. In fact, Christopher's mother and Anderson's parents had grown up together, they said.
Several years ago, Anderson had hired Christopher to work with him on a pipeline job. Rosalie claimed that it was during this time that the two had a similar altercation to the incident that occured on March 17.
Dave said that Anderson subsequently fired Christopher, and the two did not interact for a long time. However, they eventually made up.
"Chris was there in Iron River and wanted to get back to making big money in North Dakota," said Dave. "Ryan hired him back."
According to an affadavit of probable cause filed in Williams County Court, Anderson allegedly engaged in a physical altercation with his girlfriend at the Capitol Lodge man camp during the early morning hours of March 17.
Other camp occupants intervened and ended the altercation.
After leaving the area, Anderson returned.
Surveillance footage showed Christopher grabbing Anderson, and Anderson pulling an open three- to four-inch Schrade "Black Ice" folding knife out of his pocket.
Christopher was pronounced dead from stab wounds at the Tioga Medical Center.
Rosalie said that she heard about his death later that morning.
North Dakota authorities had informed the Iron River Police Department about the incident. An officer from the Iron River Police Department then found Rosalie at church and told her what had happened.
"It was terrible," Rosalie said of hearing the news.
For now, Rosalie and Dave keep up with Anderson's court appearances through family members and news reports. Neither have been able to attend any of the court appearances, though they would like to.

NEWS REPORT Iron County Reporter March 27 2013 "ND Stabbing Leaves Iron River Man Dead"
WILLISTON, N.D.-A 31-year old Iron River man has been charged with murder in connection with the stabbing death of a 32-year old Iron River man here early on March 17.
According to the Williams County Sheriff's office, Ryan Anderson is being held on a Class AA felony charge of murder. Bond was to be set at a hearing held late last week.
The sheriff's office said Anderson is being held for the fatal stabbing of Christopher King, 31, of Iron River. The two lived and worked together at the Capital Lodge man camp near Tioga, a little northeast of Williston.
In the last couple years, Williston has become a boom town due to development of the Williston Basin and its rich deposits of petroleum, oil and potash, through drilling and "fracking." As a result, the historically agricultural area has seen a huge increase of population due to workers moving in, looking for work in the oil fields or related businesses.
An affadavit of probable cause filed by the Williams County Sheriff's office said Anderson and King had been longtime friends.
The affadavit, according to the Williamston Herald, quoted a witness who said King and several other roommates at Capitol Lodge intervened in a "physical altercation" between Anderson and a girlfriend earlier that night.
After that fight ended, the statement said, the residents were waiting around for Anderson to go to bed so they could, too.
