Ontario County Journal 9 March 1883
Naples, NY - Luke French, an eccentric character of our town, died on Sunday. He was honorably connected, but refused to affiliate with his kindred and has lived a hermit's life for 40 years. He was 72 years old. Luke reportedly died at home of Joseph Gibbous, Hunts Hollow. He had been a resident of Hunts Hollow for about 65 years. Sisters Mrs. Polly Kenfield and Mrs. Lydia Aiken are the only two sisters remaining. Funeral services held for the resident Tuesday. Buried beside his wife and children in Hunts Hollow Cemetery, or James French Sr. lot.

Naples Record 9 March 1883
Died, in Hunts Hollow, in this town, on Sunday, March 4, Luke T. French, at the age of 72. By reason of certain peculiarities, Luke French was known, perhaps, to almost every person in town, and to hundreds of our readers out of town, who will notice his death with a sad interest. Naturally of good mental and physical qualities, capable of filling responsible positions among his fellows, he appeared to resist all good influences, especially for the last forty years, and his life consequently was reclusive and comparatively valueless. Mr. French came with his parents to this town from Otsego county, about 65 years ago. He was well connected, and his brothers and sisters have all been honored residents in this vicinity. He was once married, and had two children who died in infancy, and his wife died soon after. Since then he has voluntarily lived a life of exposure and privation, and the fact of his attaining such a good age is proof of a remarkably hardy constitution. A few weeks ago he was taken sick, and consented to be cared for by his friends who took him to the home of Joseph Gibbons, where he died. Funeral services were held on Tuesday at the house, conducted by Mr. E. S. Lee. Mr. French was buried in the Hunts Hollow cemetery by the side of his father and mother, his wife and children, and two brothers. Peace to his ashes.

The Neapolitan 8 March 1883
On Sunday last Luke French, aged 72, departed this life at Joseph Gibbons, Hunts Hollow, when he had been living. He had been sick a little time and his final dissolution was not unexpected to his immediate friends, who did all they could to render smooth and comfortable his last days. He had been a resident here for about 65 years and all eccentricities and genuine worth are well known to old and young. Years ago he buried a wife and two children, since which he has mingled but little with the world. His sister Mrs. Kenfield (formerly Mrs. Gordon) is the only remaining one of a large family. The funeral services were held from the residence Tuesday at 1pm, and he was buried in the Hunts Hollow cemetery by the side of his wife and children.

The Naples Record 20 November 1875
Luke French has sold the balance of his land, on High Point, to Walker. George says he will build on it soon.
