Jim is one of 6 children of Thomas & Anna (née Martin) McGowan of Dublin City, Ireland. His father was from Ringsend in Dublin, his mother was from Baltray in County Louth.

Jim was raised in Sandymount, Dublin near his aunt & uncle Elizabeth and John Mansfield & their family. He would recall, in his later years, the time he also spent with his mother's brother Patrick Martin in Louth; "Patrick married Annie Holly in Baltray and took over the family home there and I spent many happy week-ends with them during my teenage years" he wrote.

Like his brother Jack, Jim's career with the Guiness Brewery Company and later Bristol Myers took him to the United States. Carmel came to the U.S. and it was there they married. Both their daughters were born in America, Doreen in Quincy, Massachusetts & Patricia in Chicago.

After many years away, Jim & Carmel returned to Dublin, settling in Sanymount. In his retirement, he involved himself in local issues, such as the preservation of Sandymount Strand. In one article, Jim wrote:
I live beside Sandymount Strand. I consider myself lucky to have been born beside this beautiful expanse of sea and sand. I like it because it gives me, in this large metropolitan city, the illusion of living in a village beside the seaside. The Strand at Sandymount is a priceless jewel where one can sit in quiet or stroll barefoot on the cool sands at ebb tide."

Among his other pursuits during his retirement years, Jim wrote poetry. More often than not, his poems dealt with Sandymount:

High Tide At Sandymount Tower
by Jim McGowan

Foam crested waves buffet the shore
Salting the air with fine misty spray
Adding zest to the bracing sea-breeze

Offshore the scavenging seagulls repose
Like a fleet of small boats at anchor
Cresting the waves like youthful surfers
They wait to loot the sea's treasures at ebbtide

Along the promenade caged in their cars
People sit staring out to sea
As if compelled by some mysterious force
They view the boundless image of eternity

And standing astride all of this
Like a mute sentinel is Sandymount Tower
Now just a circular tomb of emptiness
A folly of a king's challenge for power

In Sandymount, at age 78, Jim passed away.

✞ James McGowan is buried in Glasnevin Cemetery with Carmel, his wife of 34 years.
