Hildred Ivette (Hughes) Ables passed away October 16, 2010 in Houston, Texas.
She was born December 6, 1915 to Oscar Dee and Mary Annies (Jones) Hughes in Soper, Oklahoma. She moved with their family to Blair, Oklahoma on January 1920, completing her elementary and secondary education there in 1933. She and Joe Ables were married August 9, 1935 in Blair. In 1937 she received a BS degree in education from Southwestern College in Durant. She taught in Holdenville High School and then from 1942 to 1945 was secretary to the president of Southwestern State College in Weatherford. After moving to Miami she taught first grade at Nichols Elementary from 1953 to 1979. In 1963 she received her MS degree from Oklahoma State University. After retiring she devoted much time to her church, the First United Methodist Church. She served on the administrative board, the staff/parish committee, and was chairman of the education committee. Hildred researched and published the history of this church, 1891-1984. An avid genealogist, she did much volunteer work in the Miami Public Library. She worked on the compilation of an index of all vital record items from the extant Ottawa County newspapers from 1900. They are printed and bound into 26 volumes and are housed in the library. As the age of 82 Hildred published the Jones Book, a collection of memories and photographs of her mother's family of eleven children, with contributions by her cousins. Hildred's husband preceded her death in 1971. Also preceding her in death were three sons, Jon in 2006, Tom in 1992, and David in 2005. In 2004 Hildred moved to Houston, Texas to live with her daughter-in-law, Gisela "Bennie" Ables, who in Hildred's words has gone "beyond the biblical second mile." Nancy Wilcox was instrumental in that "second mile," caring for her on a daily basis. In addition to Bennie and Nancy, her survivors include one sister, Elsie Muller, grandchildren, Charles Ables, Sean Ables, Suzan Pollacino, Knute Ables, Joe Ables, Damon Ables, Selena Ables , and Megan Ables, six great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Hildred will be laid to rest beside her husband at G.A.R. Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. on Friday October 22nd with a graveside memorial service and celebration of her life.
