GRIEF OVER SON PROMPTS SUICIDE

Mother Is Despondent After Offspring Ends Life

New York, Jan. 9 -- Grief over the tragic death of her son, who committed suicide by shooting himself on December 5 in his lodgings in Philadelphia, and estrangement from her husband, are believed to have been responsible for the suicide today of Mrs. Lottie Hyde Buffington, who was found dead in her apartment at 746 St. Nicholas avenue, with a bullet wound in her mouth and the gas flowing from two open jets.

On the bed beside the woman's body, when she was found by the janitor of the apartment, was a note of farewell written by the dead woman and also a telegram from her son, telling of his graduation from the Medico Chirugical College, Philadelphia.

Mrs. Buffington's son, Dr. Sidney Buffington, a nephew of Judge Joseph Buffington of the United States Circuit Court of Appeals, committed suicide in the same manner only a little more than a month ago, on the eve of a career which promised success. He had lately graduated from college with honor and had passed the State board of examination a short time before.

The note left by Mrs. Buffington reads:

"To all my dear, dear friends: Forgive, if forgiveness is needed. There is nothing else for me to do. I only surrender to a God who is more just than man. Good-by, God bless you all, you whom I love dearly."

Mrs. Buffington is said to have been estranged from her husband, William Buffington, of Kittanning, Pa. [they had been separated for fifteen months], where she also has a daughter living. Another son of the woman is Kenneth B. Buffington, who is attending Amherst College.
