Born at Bicknell, Indiana, a son of Roy Raymond and Ella Blanch (Wittenmyer) Godwin. A constant tinkerer, his hobby was repairing watches and clocks. Believing he could build just about anything, I recall his taking an old push lawnmower, adding pulleys and belts and then mounted a gasoline engine on it. He owned the first Volkswagon in the area, purchased new in 1959. Just prior to the Great Depression, he and Ruth operated a dry cleaning plant in southern Indiana. He was a retired C&EI Rail Road station agent and telegrapher. For many years he was the agent at Allerton, Illinois. In the later years, when the importance of small railroads was rapidly fading, he operated the depots at Indianola, Jamaica, Sidel and Allerton. He Married Ruth Mae Heubner at Princeton,Indiana, February 19, 1933. Their children: Ruth Ann Bridgewater, Raymond Edward Godwin, David Wesley Godwin and Mary Catherine Godwin. An active Free Mason, he was a member of Broadlands Lodge and of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Danville. He and Ruth were very active in the Eastern Star and he served several times as the Worthy Patron of the Broadlands Chapter. He was preceeded in death by one infant son and his parents.
