Army Sgt. Whetstone was assigned to the 3d Battalion, 58th Aviation (Forward), Hanau, Germany. Whetstone died as a result of non-combat injuries in Baghdad. Mason was born at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, graduated in 1990 from Dimond High School in Anchorage, Alaska, where his mother lives, and was a member of the school newspaper staff. He served in the Army from 1990 to 1994 and re-enlisted in August 1999.
