Alice Patterson, 94, of Ardmore, Okla., and formerly of Clay City, died Thursday, October 24, 2013, at Mercy Hospital in Ardmore, Okla.

Alice was born December 14, 1918, in Noble to John and Clara (Ryker) Wease. The second of seven children born to the Wease family, she was the last of her siblings to die. She married Orvel Eugene Patterson on December 18, 1937, four days after her 19th birthday.

Alice and Orvel had a long and happy marriage that lasted 65 years, living in Clay City their entire marriage.

Alice and Orvel had two daughters, Mavis and Linda. Alice was proud of her six grandchildren: Brenda and Jeff, born to Mavis and Galen Schnell, and Roger, Ray, Jim and Brian, born to Linda and Paul Dugan.

When her youngest daughter, Linda, died from cancer at the age of 32 in 1975, Alice and Orvel adopted her two youngest children, Jim and Brian, to raise. She was happy that her family multiplied with great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Alice was a homemaker and enjoyed bird watching, mushroom hunting, and fishing with her husband. She loved to cook and bake. She was especially known for her pies and fried chicken. She always loved to do crossword puzzles and other word games. Alice enjoyed table games and she and Orvel had regular game nights with different friends over the years. She was a member of the Noble Illinois Seventh-day Adventist Church for more than 60 years and, in years past, had led a Bible study class there. Before her eyes went bad, she often read her Bible, and had read it through more than once. Though she declined physically, her mind remained sharp until her death.

In 2003, Alice's husband, Orvel, died at the age of 91. Alice continued to live in her home until March 2005 when, due to poor health, she moved to Ardmore, Oklahoma, to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Mavis and Galen Schnell. In her late 80s, when her health had improved, she began going on camping trips with them (in an RV), taking her last outing at the age of 93.

Alice loved her dogs and cats, having many throughout her life. Her last pets were her two dogs, Tootsie and Tooter, who have been her constant companions for the past 12 years.

She was a member of Ardmore Seventh-day Adventist and Noble Seventh-day Adventist churches.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mavis and Galen Schnell; sons, Jim Patterson and Brian Patterson; grandchildren, Roger Dugan, Ray Dugan, Brenda Schnell, and Jeff Schnell; great-grandchildren, Dale and Derrick Dugan, Linda Patterson, and Cole Patterson; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, husband and daughter, Linda Dugan.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31 in Clay City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30 at Summers-Kistler Funeral Home in Clay City.
