The man whose body was found in Art Alley died after being struck in the head, Rapid City police said Thursday.

The death of Lamaure Afraid of Hawk, 44, of Rapid City is being investigated as a homicide as police seek to learn what happened to him before he was found around 9 p.m. Tuesday behind the Brass Rail bar at 624 St. Joesph St.

"If anyone was in the Brass Rail that night, we'd like to talk to them," Capt. James Johns, the police department's head of investigations, said Thursday.

Investigators do not believe, however, that Afraid of Hawk entered the bar that evening.

"We're still waiting for reports," Johns said.

Officers were called to the Brass Rail after reports that an underage man was causing trouble and refused to leave. They found Angelo Richards, 19, of Rapid City in a restroom, and he was arrested and charged with resisting arrest and underage drinking.

While on that call, police found Afraid of Hawk lying unresponsive in Art Alley. He was declared dead at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Preliminary autopsy results released Thursday show that he died of blunt force trauma to the head, according to the police.
