Obituary

BUCKSPORT - Helen Maxine (Spooner) Bennett, 82, died Oct. 29, 2013, at home, surrounded by family and the things she cherished. She was born Nov. 30, 1930, in Perham, a daughter of Cecil and Sigrid (Akerson) Spooner.

Helen attended school through the eighth grade in one room school houses in Aroostook County. She often helped the teacher with the younger students. She went on to high school in Caribou before moving to Bucksport with her family. Helen was proud of her Scandinavian heritage and corresponded for many years with relatives in Norway. She had a passion for reading, a love that was passed on to many of her children and grandchildren. She could recite passages, word for word, from some of her favorite books. Being a child of the depression era, she had a knack for making something out of nothing. Many times someone would come to her door in need of a specific item of clothing, a word of advice, or just a shoulder to cry on; Helen had a way of coming up with just what they needed. She made pickles of all kinds, beautiful jars of spiced crab apples and her mincemeat was the best. Her knitting abilities were amazing. Many pairs of mittens and stockings are treasured by family and friends. We would be remiss if we didn't mention her love of music and singing. Some of her favorites were by Patsy Cline and Hank Williams to mention a few. Helen was a member of North Bucksport United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher for several years. Mrs. Bennett was employed at the Bucksport School Department for 11 years as a student assistant for Billy Jo Beaulieu. A job she thoroughly enjoyed. She and Billy Jo have kept in touch for more than 20 years since graduation. She also spent many years caring for the elderly. Mother was a "giver" she did it all and she definitely did it her way. May you find your heaven, you have earned it. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Helen is survived by her devoted husband of 66 years, Stanley Bennett Sr.; two daughters, Edwina French of Surry, and Linda and husband, Walter Browning, of Stockton Springs; three sons, Stanley Jr., Daniel, and Alan, all of Bucksport; eight beloved grandchildren, Heidi Sue Gross, Craig Browning, Rebecca and husband, John Richardson, Matthew Browning and wife, Sarah, Heather and husband, James Dugas, Stacey and husband, Cameron McLellan, Angela and husband, Greg Cushman, and Andrew Farnsworth; and 11 precious great-grandchildren, Emmaline, Mary, Taylor, Lola, Ashton, Isabella, Stella, Abigail, Gabrielle, Apollo, and Teagen. She also leaves behind three sisters, Joyce Burrill of Bangor, Erlene and husband, Percy Harding, of Bar Harbor, and Esther Weston of Bucksport; and four brothers, Erwin Spooner of Bucksport, Caroll Spooner and wife, Gail, of Bar Harbor, Donald Spooner and wife, Donna, of Bucksport, and Peter Spooner and wife, Ellen, of Brewer. Helen also is survived by four sisters-in-law, Geneva and husband, Elmer Smith, of Orrington, Rosemary and husband, Bernard Bennett, of Bangor, Lucille Quinn of Tremont, and Gertrude Crockett of Tampa, Fla.; and many special nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and neighbors, too numerous to name individually. Her life was blessed to have all of you in it. Helen was predeceased by her parents; and several in-laws.

Special thanks and appreciation to granddaughter, Stacey, for the loving care and assistance she gave to her "Gram."
