CANTON - Harry H. Garner, 71, of 965 E. Olive St. died at 12:28 p.m. Saturday, April 29, 2000, at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria.
Born Jan. 10, 1929, in Garfield County, Neb., to James and Jennie Hoadley Garner, he married Erma Eales on April 15, 1952, in Pittsfield. She survives.
Also surviving are one son, Troy of Canton; two daughters, Melinda Wilcoxen of Canton and Mrs. Jess (Tamara) Knight of Washington; two grandchildren; three step grandchildren; one great grandchild; one step great grandchild; and one sister, Ona Ogle of New London, Mo.
He was preceded in death by one grandson and four brothers.
He graduated from Bailey Technical Institute in St. Louis in 1957. He worked at J & J Ready Mix in Mapleton; Consolidated Coal Co. in Fiatt, St. David and Norris; ASARCO in Trivoli; Arch of Illinois in Pinckneyville; the Illinois River Correctional Facility in Canton as a correctional officer; and Brown Shoe Co. in Pittsfield.
He was a Korean War Navy veteran, serving from 1952 to 1954.
He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America.
He was of the Protestant faith.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Murphy-Sedwick Memorial Home. The Rev. Todd Waggoner will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 30 minutes before services Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in White Chapel Memory Gardens.
