James "Jim" was the son of William M. Cobb and Dorthea "Dorothy" (Grooms) Cobb. His parents were married on Jan. 25, 1830 in Caswell CO, NC. The family had moved to Henry CO, TN by 1850, and to Carroll CO, TN by the 1860 Federal Census. William M. Cobb wrote his will on June 28, 1867 and his will was presented in the Carroll CO, TN Probate Court, August 1867 term.

James married Nancy Caroline "Callie" Bunn in Henry CO, TN on Oct. 15, 1876.
