James was the son of James "Jim" Hodge and Martha "Patsy" (Stoker) Hodge.
He married Martha Jane Lipe in Carroll CO, TN in August 1863.
James enlisted as a Private in CO I, 7th Tenn Cavalry, U.S.A., in Union City, TN on September 15, 1863. He was captured in Union City, TN on March 24, 1864 and sent to Andersonville Prison in Georgia. James was hospitalized on January 14, 1865. He was exchanged in Jacksonville, Florida, on April 14, 1865, where he mustered out of service. James Hodge received an invalid pension.
