Merlin H. Hayes

COLUMBUS/RIO - Merlin H. Hayes, 78, passed away peacefully after a long illness in the presence of his family on Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, at the Columbus Community Hospital. He was born on Feb. 19, 1930, in the town of Columbus, to Frank and Lucy (Hiley) Hayes. He was a Korean War veteran serving in the U.S. Army. He was married to Mabel Lienke on Aug. 27, 1955, in Columbus. Merlin was a proud lifelong area dairy farmer. At one time, he also worked for Russell Andler Trucking of Columbus, and Caine Transfer of Lowell. He was a member of the NFO (National Farmers Organization) for 47 years, holding several offices over the years. Merlin was a member of the Olivet United Church of Christ in Columbus where he served on several church boards and committees.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Mabel, Rio; three sons, Donald (Lori), Russell (Bonnie), and James (Dawn), all of Columbus; three daughters, Diane (Bill) Breunig, Darlene (Pat) Crombie, and Barb (Dale) Heiman, all of Columbus; 14 grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Hagens and her husband Bill "Dennis" Mallon, Fall River; two sisters-in-law, Fern Yohn and Dorothy (Phil) Lang, both of Columbus; one brother-in-law, Fred "Fritz" (Betty) Lienke, Columbus; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Dorothy Hayes; four brothers-in-law, William "Tiny" Dynes, Lloyd Yohn, Norbert Hagens, William "Bill" Lienke; a special nephew, Gerald Hagens.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at the Olivet Congregational United Church of Christ, Columbus. The Rev. Lee Zortman will officiate. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Columbus, with full military rites. Visitation will be from 5:30 until 8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home, and from 10 until 11 a.m. at the church on Tuesday.
