In 1900 she and her parents and seven siblings lived in a house they owned, with a mortgage, in Lower Yoder Township, Cambria County, PA. Her father worked as a laborer for a steel company.

Her husband worked as a mill hand in a steel mill, with an income in 1939 of $600 for 40 weeks of work. Lester worked as a radio repairman, and Robert as an apprentice in a tin shop, with an income in 1939 of $624 for 52 weeks of work.
