Elster "Al" Blankenship, 68, went to be with the Lord on April 28, 1995. He leaves behind his loving wife of 11 years, Yvonne of Wofford Height; brothers Olives of Pikeville, Kentucky, Shirley of Anaheim, Ottis of Paintsville, Kentucky; sister, Mabel Blackburn of Pikeville, Kentucky; daughters Linda and husband Ken Gaynor, Deborah and husband Bill Stovall and Glennis and husband Jerry Spear; his son Michael and wife Holly Blankenship; step-children Chantel Virlet, John Tomcic, Richard Tomcic, Kathleen Garuti and Nadia Mormann; and a host of grandchildren.
Elster was born in Coal Run, Pike County, Kentucky to Alex Blankenship and Dollie McGuire on May 7, 1926. He served with the U.S. Navy Seabees in 1943, and retired in 1968 at CBC Port Hueneme. He was a veteran of the World War II, Korean and Vietnam wars. He also received numerous medals and ribbons. He worked and retired from Camarillo State Hospital as a welder and chief steward for the State Employees Association. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Shriners Club and the Elks.
Memorial services will be held at the VFW in Lake Isabella on Tuesday, May 2, 1995 at 10 a.m. Ashes will be scattered at sea.
