JAY R. BINGHAM

Jay R. Bingham, beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grand father, uncle, and friend to many, passed away Sunday morning, May 19, 2002, at the age of 83.

He was born to Howard Rulon and Violet Woolf Bingham in Hyde Park, Utah, on March 23, 1919. He married Lyal Stanton on November 20, 1940 in the Logan LDS Temple. Jay was raised on the family farm in Amalga, Cache County, Utah and attended North Cache High School at Richmond. Jay attended the Utah State Agricultural College (the A.C., now Utah State University) in Logan where, in 1941, he graduated in Civil Engineering. Following graduation he worked for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and then Thorn Rock Products in Provo. He was appointed Director of the Utah Water and Power Board (now the Division of Water Resources), subsequently the Director of the Department of Natural Resources. Following employment with the State he served as the Executive Director of the Western States Water Council and then accepted a position as Vice President of Terracor. The desire to focus on planning and designing of major water resource projects lead him to form Bingham Engineering, a consulting engineering firm, in 1973. Until the age of 81, Jay continued to report to work every day when he was not attending an advisory meeting for Dixie College in St. George or for Utah State University in Logan. Also active in civic affairs, Mr. Bingham has been a City Councilman for Bountiful, Utah, as well as member of the Bountiful City Planning Commission, the Bountiful City Power Commission, and the advisory committee to Pro-Utah, Inc. He has been active in scouting, serving as Vice President of the Great Salt Lake Council, Boy Scouts of America, and also receiving the prestigious Silver Beaver Award. Mr. Bingham has been recognized by educational institutions for his contributions. These recognitions include the Distinguished Service Award from Utah State University, the Utah Lifetime Achievement Award from Southern Utah State College, the Old Main Society and the Centennial Honoree Award from Utah State University, and the first Spirit of Old Main Award for lifelong dedication to Utah State University. Along with his extraordinary career and civic contributions, Jay's devotion to the LDS Church has been characterized by active service and numerous leadership callings both locally and church-wide. He served in a bishopric in Springville and a stake presidency in Bountiful. He served on the Priesthood Correlation Committee for several years and was a sealer for many years at the Salt Lake Temple and then at the Bountiful Temple.

He will be missed by his six children and their spouses: Tyra and Robert Clayton, Sandy; Brent and Karell Bingham, Bountiful; Beth and Mike Johnston, Farmington; Douglas and Glenda Bingham, Randolph; Lance and Heidi Bingham, Bountiful; and Shelly and Jeff Shumway, Alpine; 26 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Tad H. Bingham of Amalga, Utah.

Jay Bingham has energetically and optimistically devoted his life to his six great hobbies: his family, now numbering 53; his church and God; his friends; his work in water resources and engineering; his alma mater, Utah State University; and the Jazz 100 Club. He exemplified gospel principles and cherished deep friendships with many and above all with his family.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 24, at 11:00 a.m. in the Lakeview Ward Chapel, 455 South 1200 East, Bountiful. Interment at Lakeview Cemetery.
