Infamous as an Oregon highway engineer who blew up a dead beached 45-foot 8-ton Sperm whale with a half-ton of dynamite in 1970.

He was born to William "Bill the Barber" and Nora Honor (Thomas) Thornton. He graduated from Clatskanie High School in 1947. His wife was Dorothy L. Price whom he married in Clatskanie on July 21, 1951 and they celebrated their 61st anniversary in 2012.

Mr. Thornton joined the Oregon Department of Transportation in 1947 and remained there for the next 37 years until his retirement in 1984.
