Paul Edward Green, Jr., loving husband, father and friend, left this earthly home on Saturday, October 26th, 2013 at the age of 89. Paul leaves with us wonderful memories of all the things he loved. He was born on September 16, 1924 to Berta Matthews Green and Paul Edward Green in Roanoke Rapids, N. C. He lived the majority of his years in Roanoke Rapids except during his time away at UNC Chapel Hill. There he earned a BS in Commerce from the School of Banking, was a member of the Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity, and managed the UNC track team from 1945 to 1946. Paul later went on to graduate from the School of Banking of the South at LSU. He remained an avid UNC fan his entire life.

He married the lovely Jean Busbee on March 5, 1949. This blessed union lasted until Jean's death in January 2012. They had three children and seven wonderful grandchildren. Paul cherished his family and was extremely proud of them.

He worked in the banking field for 39 years, served on the Board of Centura Bank for 8 years, and retired as the Vice President of Planters National Bank/Centura in Roanoke Rapids. Though his bank changed names several times he remained faithful to the business of helping others.

He served on many Boards and in various capacities in the area civic clubs. His financial skills placed him in treasurer/ financial officer positions for groups ranging from the Fireman's Relief Fund to committees at his home church. He was on the Board of the Jaycees, Merchants Club, Kiwanis Club, Chamber of Commerce, Halifax Memorial Hospital and First United Methodist Church. To each group he offered his time and talents to serve his hometown.

He was a lifelong member of First UMC and gave generously of his gifts and abilities. He was a member of the choir, chairman of the Board of Trustees, the Wills and Legacy committee, and the Finance committee during his attendance there. Most importantly, he worshipped with his family each week and enjoyed the fellowship.

After many years of living on Lake Gaston creating memories with his family, Paul and Jean hit the road. They camped, along with the family dog and good friends, across the USA and Canada. A few cruises were thrown in along the way. His children always joked that the dog was better traveled than they were. Wherever he journeyed, he loved to share these moments with the many friends he loved who are too numerous to name but will always be dear.

In his later years, Paul's love for Jean was a shining example for all who knew him. Paul, along with our "angel" Jane Smith, cared for Jean as she withdrew into Alzheimers. In 2011 the couple moved to Fuquay Varina to live at Windsor Point Retirement Community so Jean could get the care she needed. The staff at Windsor Point, the friends he made and the excellent caregivers he had made the transition easy, but he never lost his love for Roanoke Rapids. Paul recently returned to Roanoke Rapids and made his home at The Bayberry. He was again blessed with good care, fellowship and companionship. Many thanks to the staff at The Bayberry, also Becky, Lois, Debbie and Tereasa for their kindness and caregiving. Paul's surviving children, Michael and Melissa, are blessed to have been able to express their love for their father as they too shared quality time as his caregivers.

Paul was predeceased by his parents, wife Jean Busbee Green, son Stephen Edward Green, brother Henry Greene and wife Marie, sister Hazel McLennon and husband Ken, and nephews Henry Greene, Jr. and Richard McLennon. What a glorious homecoming for them all! His children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends will all hold dear loving memories of a life well lived.

A memorial service celebrating the life of Paul Edward Green, Jr. will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at 12 noon at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ray Broadwell conducting the service and Rev. Corey Oliver assisting. Visitation will be in the church Fellowship Hall at 10:30 am and following the committal service at the graveside. Honorariums may be donated to The Guardian Angel Store in Fuquay Varina, NC to aid in Alzheimer's research.
