A. Jean (Gurney) Rice, 90, of Village East, Apt. #9-B, 546 Union St., North Adams, died Friday, May 16, 2003, at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield.
She was born in New Bedford on April 10, 1913, a daughter of the late Preston S. Gurney and Sarah (Kenyon) Gurney.
She moved to North Adams at a young age and attended city schools. She graduated from Drury High School with the Class of 1931 and then attended Swain School of Design in New Bedford.
Mrs. Rice was employed as a telephone operator for several years. For most of her life, she was a devoted homemaker, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
While a resident of Baldwinsville, N.Y., she was a member of the Baldwinsville Episcopal Church. She was a member of the North Adams Travel Club and the North Adams Garden Club. She was also a member of Daughters of the American Revolution.
Mrs. Rice attended the Stamford (Vt.) Community Church.
Her husband, Douglas T. Rice, whom she married Dec. 7, 1950, died April 1, 1989.
Survivors include a son, Robert Preston Rice of Stamford; five grandchildren, Preston Rice of Tempe, Ariz., Allison Rougeau of North Adams, Jeff Connor of Boynton Beach, Fla., John Connor of Stamford, and Jennifer Connor of Gabriels, N.Y.; and six great-grandchildren, Griffin and Morgan Rougeau and Alyssa, Rowan, Spencer and Kierra Connor.
A sister, Margaret Gurney Coughlin, predeceased her.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services will be Thursday, 10 a.m., at Stamford Community Church, with the Rev. William Wilson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be private at the Rice family plot in Hillside Cemetery, North Adams. There are no calling hours.
