A captain in the U.S. Air Force, Butler flew F-105s in Vietnam in 1967, until he was forced to eject over North Vietnam and was taken as a POW on Nov. 20, 1967.
After spending 1,492 days in captivity, he was released during Operation Homecoming on March 14, 1973.
Butler is survived by his second wife; his two sons; four daughters; and by six grandchildren.
