A venerable Citizen Dead
Col. James A. Swain, a venerable gentleman known here for the past fifteen years, died at his residence near Gill's Station, three miles east of this city, Last night. Col. Swain has figured conspicuously in insurance circles, having a number of years served as agent of the Equitable and other companies. col. Swain came here from the state of Wisconsin, for which commonwealth he served as Adjutant General twenty years ago, his residence then being at Milwaukee, where he reared a family of several sons and daughters. the oldest of the latter was married in 1860, to mr. Oscar Ogden, at the time one of the wealthiest and most promising citizens of Cincinnati. During the war col. Swain attained the rank by which he knows, in the national army and; for a period he was quartermaster general on the staff of General John Pope. the departed gentleman was twice married, his first wife having died at the north and his second in this city some two years ago. He was united to the latter ten or twelve years back here. At one time Col. owned considerable property in and about this city, but it has dwindled away, and it is said he died quite poor. He was well advanced in years, having reached the ripe age of nearly three score and ten. Peace to his ashes.
