EUGENE STREETS

Eugene R. "Gene" Streets, 89, of Maquoketa passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013, at Finley Hospital in Dubuque, Iowa.

A memorial service celebrating Gene's life will be conducted on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 11 A.M. at the First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa. Friends and family may gather prior to the service from 10 A.M. until 11 A.M. at the First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa. Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa is caring for the family. In accordance with Gene's wishes, cremation rites have been accorded.

Gene was born Aug. 22, 1924 to Anna (Stahlberg) and Roy Streets in Cedar Rapids, Ia. Gene attended schools in the Cedar Rapids area and California. He married Harriet Cook on Jan. 25, 1942 in Kahoka, Mo. After receiving a medical discharge from the Air Force, Gene and Harriet made their home in Cedar Rapids where he started off in the tool and die industry before moving to Maquoketa and working at Clinton Engines. Through his employment with Clinton Engines he was located in various cities in Michigan before returning to work in the Maquoketa plant as Vice President of Manufacturing. Additionally, Gene worked for Tecumseh Products in Sheboygan, Wis., and spent several years as Vice President of Manufacturing at Mercury Marine in Fond du Lac, Wis.

After retiring to Florida for a couple of years, Gene and Harriet returned to the Fond du Lac area where they owned and operated a bakery in Cambellsport, Wis.

Gene enjoyed golf, fishing trips and woodworking. In the later years when his eyes began to fail him, he found a love for books on tape.

Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Harriet of Maquoketa; his daughter, Pam (Gary) Eggers of Maquoketa; three grandchildren, Shane Whaley of Alabama, Shelby (Wayne) Scharff of Maquoketa and Seth (Lena Larson) Whaley of Maquoketa along with four step-grandchildren, Paul Eggers of Dubuque, Jon (Carrie) Eggers of Andrew, Ben (Jamie) Eggers of Tennessee and Beth Lennon of Maquoketa. Gene is further survived by 12 great-grandchildren and 10 step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and step-father, LeRoy T. Smith.

Memorials may be made to the First Lutheran Church, Maquoketa, the DVSA Resource Center, Maquoketa or the Maquoketa Food Pantry.
