Joseph Sterling, 87, passed away on October 28, 2013. He was born in Fort Dix, NJ to George and Teresa Sterling. Joseph proudly served his country in the United States Army during WWII- 290th Combat Engineer Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division where he worked destroying enemy bridges. He fought in the French Alps and in the Koehl Pocket. During his service, he earned the Bronze Star for bravery, European Campaign Medal with two Bronze Vs, WWII Victory Medal, Marksmanship Badge with Rifle Bar and Good Conduct Award. After his military service, Joseph worked for United Technologies for 30 years and then went on to work for Naval Air Depot for an additional 20 years. He was a devoted husband and caring father; many would say they have never met a braver man. He is preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Mary Ellen (Kiley); parents; brother, George Sterling; sister-in-law, Margaret Sterling and Uncle Joe Eiser. His survived by his sons, Joseph Sterling of West Hartford, CT and John Sterling of Jacksonville, FL; daughters, Ellen Bridge (Dan) of Pearland, TX and Nancy Grathwohl of Charleston, SC; many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren and 9 nieces and nephews in Delaware City, DE. Joseph will receive military honors at Jacksonville National Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home of Mandarin, 11801 San Jose Blvd. Jacksonville, FL 32223.
