Jack was the son of Charles K. Hopkins and Thelma L. Hopkins of Ypsilanti MI and he enlisted in the US Marine Corps on July 9 1963 in Detroit MI. In Vietnam he was serving with Battery K, 4th Battalion, 12th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On February 27, Cpl Hopkins was driving a 3/4 Ton Truck carry students of the 12th Marines FO (Forward Observer) Schools OP (Out Post) detonated a mine near the Huong Thuy, Phu Loc District border three kilometers southwest of Highway 1. Seven students were wounded , the driver, Cpl Hopkins was also wounded and evacuated to the NSA Hospital in DaNang where he died of the injuries he had sustained.
