Lynn Allen Morey Jr., 86, of Sarasota, formerly of Union City, Mich., died Dec. 25, 2009.

Born in Union City, Mich., Lynn moved to Sarasota in 1952 and was one of the "early" developers in our community. From the 1950s to 1980s he built several residential neighborhoods, 10 condominiums on Siesta Key, the first high-rise on Gulfstream Avenue bayfront, the first condominium R.V. park in Brooksville and R.V. and mobile home park in Nokomis.

Lynn was truly a gift from God, and for that his family and friends will be forever grateful. He wanted to be remembered as a good father, good grandfather and good friend. He was that and so much more. He was extraordinary.

His character and soul were reflected by being a deacon at Pine Shores Presbyterian Church and a member of the Masonic Temple; work ethic demonstrated by the homes he built; and patriotism as a proud American and relentless student of history. He was playful in sports and dance; tenacious golfer and puzzle solver; National Park camper and nature lover; exceptional photographer; and an adventurous and optimistic spirit who went snow skiing and white water rafting for the first time in his life in his 70s. After experiencing a stroke 3 1/2 years ago, Lynn's courage and heart were evident with his ever-present, contagious smile and the sparkle in his eyes, communicating love and lessons quite effectively, even with fewer "words."

Lynn is survived by his four very proud children, Pam Hart-Houfek (John), Cheryl Stanzione-Creighton (Jim), Lynn A. Morey III, and Kim (Chris) Wheeler, all of Sarasota; his sister, Marilynn Jensen of Apex, N.C.; also five grandchildren, Jason Hart (Christi) of Richmond, Va., Jon Hart (Tanya), Ashley Morey, Mackenzie Morey and Jessica Morey, all of Sarasota; one great-granddaughter, Kendall Hart; five nieces; and his special friend and caregiver, Nancy Vontz.

Many years ago Lynn Allen Morey born 21 Jul 1923 told me he had been to a village called Morey during his second war years. Morey, France - Just East of the Moselle River. The source of the Moselle is at the western slope of the Ballon d'Alsace in the Vosges Mountains. The Moselle flows through the Lorraine region, west of the Vosges. Morey was a scene of some of the brutal fighting for the 80th Infantry Division in 1944.

Lynn Allen Morey married Marquerite Heath 26 Jun 1943 Detroit, Wayne, MI, USA and the 80th Infantry Division, had activated on 15 Jul 1942, went to Europe on 01 Jul 1944 for World War II, ETO Combat. The Division landed on Utah Beach, Normandy, France 03 Aug 1944 and was inserted into the line immediately engaging the Germans in Evron, Ste. Suzanne, Argentan. It was also active in the Falaise Pocket.

Assigned to Third Army the 80th Division moved swiftly across France to the Seille River. November found them in the Saar Basin and December found them attacking the Siegfried Line.

When the Germans began their Ardennes Offensive, the 80th moved north to Luxembourg slamming into the German lines Southeast of Bastogne where heavy fighting continued unto the spring. By February the Battle of the Bulge was over and the Division and the rest of the Allies were back on the on the offensive, with the 80th breaking through the Siegfried line and then crossing the Rhine at the end of March.

In April, the 80th Division had captured Kassel, Erfurt, Weimar, Jena and Gera. It then moved to Regensburg at the end of the month. The 80th Infantry Division was on the Enns River when V-E Day arrived.
