Deceased Name: Ruth Schantz Fortino
Ruth Schantz Fortino, 93, of Bethlehem died September 24 at Moravian Village. Born in Zionsville, PA, she was the daughter of Norman and Ella Schantz of Emmaus and sister to the late Daniel and Miriam Schantz. A 1938 graduate of Emmaus High School, she continued her education at Moravian College, graduating in 1942 with a bachelor of science in medical technology. A sports enthusiast, she played for and managed the womens varsity basketball team. After college, she worked for General Aniline in Easton and later at the Miller Memorial Blood Bank in Bethlehem. Her lifelong interest in classical music included volunteer work as an usher at the Bethlehem Bach Festival and membership in the St. Mathews Lutheran Church and Central Moravian Church choirs. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed hiking in Maine with her sister and later with her family. Her enthusiasm for life and generosity towards her family and friends will be fondly remembered and sorely missed.
Survivors: She is survived by her brother, Richard of Bethlehem. She celebrated 63 years of marriage to Placido Fortino of Easton in July. She is the mother of three daughters, Sally Fortino of Basel, Switzerland, Lucy Fortino of Pittsburgh, PA and Victoria Fortino of Nahant, MA; and is also survived by 18 nieces and nephews.
