Helen I. Abelson, 83, died Fri. 22 Jan. 2010, at a local nursing home following a brief illness.
Services will be 1 p.m. Sat. at Riverside United Methodist Church with the Rev. Janice Bennett officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Fri., with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. & at 7 p.m. prayer service at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Helen was born 7 Feb. 1926, in LeMars, Iowa, the daughter of Purl & Rose (Klave) Frank. She married Paul Abelson on 4 Feb. 1949, in Sioux City. Helen worked at JC Penney's & then at Thompson Drug where she met Paul.
Helen & Paul started the Billy Boy Restaurant in 1962 & ran it for many years. It continues to be owned by family members.
Helen was a member of the Riverside United Methodist Church & taught Sunday School there & at Whitfield United Methodist. She was a member of the Organ Club, Girls of '68 & the Woodman Newrow Sorority, Goodwill, V.F.W. & D.A.V. auxiliaries. Helen had been a Girl Scout leader & she was a world traveler.
Survivors include her husband, Paul of Sioux City; 4 children, Thomas E. (Kathy) Abelson of Highland, NJ., Deloris (Dave) Friebus of Sarasota, Fla., Robert E. (Linda) Abelson of Fairbury, Neb., DeNise (Randy) Bailey of Sioux City; her brother & sisters, Pat (Joe) Honeycutt of Wichita, Kan., Clinton McKettrick of Abilene, Tex., Frances (Gary) Finken of Dakota Dunes, & Carol (Dave) Krommenhoek of Sergeant Bluff; 10 grandchildren, Doug, Brand, Jonathon Friebus, Chris (Melody) Abelson, Tina (Todd) Boulware, Jennifer & Aaron Abelson, Melissa (Casey) Wright, Deidra Sommerville, Nick & Kristi Bailey; 14 great-grandchildren, Trenton & Tamen Brand, Kaleb, Nick & Collin Abelson, Carly & Haley Boulware, Austin & Jordan Case, Brayden Meyers, Lilli Hammitt, Alden Wright, Brayden & Braxton Bailey.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Pallbearers will be Chris Abelson, Aaron Abelson, Trent Brand, Jonathon Friebus & Doug Brand.
Honorary pallbearers are Kaleb, Nick & Collin Abelson, Austin & Jordan Case, Brayden Meyers, Brayden & Braxton Bailey, Alden Wright & Tamen Brand.
