Sylvia Gibson Bowersox passed peacefully into the arms of her maker on October 22, 2013 at the Bethany Village Oaks Skilled Nursing Care Center. Born in Alinda, PA in Perry County, on May 26, 1920, she was one of seventeen children of John B. and Mary H. Gibson of Landisburg, PA.
Sylvia graduated from Landisburg High School and from Thompson Business School in Harrisburg. Sylvia was a talented artist in many different areas including oil, pastel, and water color painting. She was a world class designer and maker of hooked rugs and was featured in the Rug Hooking magazine. She was a member of the Harrisburg Bridge Club and enjoyed golf and bowling. Sylvia and her husband Ralph were delighted in touring the country in their motor home and in spending time at their winter home in Florida.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her first husband Harry B. Baker of Lemoyne PA, a Captain in the US Army Air Corps, who was killed in action in Europe during World War II. Sylvia was also preceded in death by her second husband Ralph C. Bowersox to whom she was married for sixty five years. They lived in Camp Hill, PA for over sixty years. She was also predeceased by her sisters Lena, Blanche, Sarah, twin sister Goldie and brothers John, Frank, Edward, Wayne and Robert.
Sylvia is survived by her two sons, Harry G. Baker (Jim) and his wife Margaret (Peg) of Mechanicsburg, PA and David G. Bowersox of Chester Springs, PA. She has two grandchildren: Karen L. Robinson of Mechanicsburg, PA and James D. Baker with his wife Marci of Mechanicsburg, PA. She also has two great grandchildren, Jack M. and Maddi J. Baker. Sylvia is also survived by sisters: Jane Gibson, in California, Mary Thomas in New Cumberland, PA, Fayetta Campbell in South Carolina, Janet Flanigan in Florida and Diane Tritt of Harrisburg, PA. In addition, she is survived by two brothers: George Gibson in New Bloomfield, PA and Phillip Gibson in Camp Hill, PA.
A visitation will be held at 11:30 AM on Friday, November 15, 2013 at the Malpezzi Funeral Home, 8 Market Plaza Way, Mechanicsburg, PA, 17055. A service will follow the visitation beginning at 12:30 PM. Interment will be with her husband at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
