Named William Richmond Holly at birth he never used his full name and was always known as Billy D. Holly.

He was a power lineman with Louisiana Power & Light Company for 40 years based at the Beaver Creek Substation, Camp Livingston, Pineville, Rapides, LA and then the Cane River Substation, Natchitoches, Natchitoches, LA.

Billy D. Holly

Billy D. Holly was born 26 April 1921 at Tioga, Rapides Parish, La. He died on Friday, 7 October 2005 after a lengthy illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd Chester Holly, Sr. and Ilda Garnett Simpson Holly; sister, Ilda Josephine "Jo" Holly Robertson and her husband John Lee Robertson, all of Pineville, and brother-in-law, Dr. Robert James "Bud" Ducharme of Lafayette.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Irene Woodruff Holly of Natchitoches; two sons, William "Bill" R. Holly, Jr., and his wife Polly St. Andre Holly of Pineville and James Larry Holly, M.D., and his wife Carolyn Bellue Holly of Beaumont, Texas; one foster son, Wayne Kerry Snell and his wife Ana Morejon Snell of New Orleans; one foster daughter, Jennifer Kaye Spoonts of Magnolia, Texas; grandchildren, Darryl Richmond Holly of Texas, Duane Randall Holly of California, Donna Renee Holly Holder, Carrie Elizabeth Holly McMahan and Richmond Everett Holly, all of Texas, Wayne Kerry Snell, Jr. and Daniel Snell, both of Louisiana, and Jason Spoontz of Texas; and great-grandchildren, Shelby Nicole Holly, Cody Richmond Holly, Johnnie Elmore "Beau" McMahan V, Hannah-Katherine McMahan, Holly-Victoria McMahan, Elizabeth Anne McMahan, Emma Caroline Holly and Catherine "Kate" Anne Holly, all of Texas, and Hana Lei Snell and Alaia Nova Snell of Louisiana.

Also survived by his brother, Floyd Chester Holly, Jr., and wife Jeanne Fournet Holly; sisters Mary Elizabeth Holly Ducharme and Clara Estelle Holly Hurst, all of Louisiana; and numerous nephews and nieces.

He graduated from Tioga High School in 1940. Due to being blind in one eye, he was unable to serve in the military during WWII but worked as a firefighter at Pollock Airbase and Esler Field Airbase in Grant and Rapides parishes. He was a lineman, a "wood walker," with Louisiana Power & Light Company for 42 years, retiring in 1990 in Natchitoches where the family was transferred in 1950. He has been described to his sons as "Mr. LP&L." In later years, when introduced to some younger power lineman from another power company, one of them was heard to remark, "We didn't think he was a real person, we thought he was just a legend like Paul Bunyon from all the stories we've heard about him."

He was active as an adult leader in Natchitoches Parish 4-H Club work and Boy Scouts and Explorer Scouts in the 1950s and 1960s.

He was selected as Natchitoches Man of the Year in 1959 and was selected as 4-H Club Provider of the Year. He enjoyed raising his own food, always having one of the finest gardens in the parish, raising his own beef and milking his own Jersey cow.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, 8 October and services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, 9 October at Blanchard St. Denis Funeral Home, Kyser Avenue, Natchitoches. Interrment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, on US 165 in Pineville, La.

Pallbearers will be grandsons Darryl Holly, Duane Holly, Richmond Holly, Wayne Snell, Jr., Daniel Snell and grandsons-in-law Sam McMahan, Larry Holder, and great-grandson Beau McMahan.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the charity of your choice, the Louisiana Baptist Children's Home in Monroe, La., or the Boy Scouts of America.
