A son of William Henry and Winifred (or Millie) Jones Henry Godwin, Benjamin was a farmer for a period of time and later in life a coal miner employed by Kings Mine near Princeton, Gibson County, Indiana for many years. He was a long-time and proud member of the United Mine Workers union. He married Sarah Jane Buckles on November 14, 1883.
